It says a lot about being a Mizzou sports fan that three out of the top four are losses. Click on the links to see the videos.
7. 2003: Mizzou 72, SIU 71. How to remember this one? As Mizzou's last NCAA victory? As Arthur Johnson's 24-point performance? As as Ricky Clemons (3 points in 30 minutes) way to leave his mark on Mizzou hoops. Watch coach Quin in action. 6. 1994: Mizzou 98, Syracuse 88: ( OT) Norm's last run. Kelly Thames and Melvin Booker each had 24 points and put Norm Stewart on the verge of the Final 4. The Tigers are crushed by Arizona in the regional final. Norm never makes to another regional again. 5. 2002: Mizzou 82, UCLA 73: The high point of the Quin Snyder era came when the 12th seeded Tigers marched all the way to the regional finals, where the lost to Oklahoma. Clarence Gilbert had 23 points for Mizzou, matching UCLA's Matt Barnes for the game high. 4. 1982: Houston 79, Mizzou 78: This was supposed to be Mizzou's year to make it to the Final 4. Stipo and Sundvold in their junior year, playing the regional in St. Louis. Instead it was the coming out party for Phi Slamma Jamma and Hakeen Olajuwon. 3. 1976: Michigan 95, Mizzou 88: Willie Smith became a one-man team for Mizzou. His 29 second-half points, most coming from impossible distances and in the face of triple teams, nearly put the Tigers in the Final Four. 2. 1980 Mizzou 87, Notre Dame 84 (OT): vs. Notre Dame: Before Mark Dressler joined me behind the bar at Deja Vu. He we the 8th man on a Mizzou basketball team that was only 8 deep. Dressler scored 32 points in leading the upset for Mizzou over Kelly Tripuka and Notre Dame. It was the freshman year for the Stipo-Sundvold era, and it was their best NCAA moment. 1. 1995: UCLA 75, Mizzou 74: Tyus Edney goes the length of the court to make the winning basket. UCLA goes on to win the title. Mizzou misses a program-defining moment. ... and the lane wasn't as open as I remember it being. Thursday March 12, 2009

A ranking released by Combos cheese snacks last week put St. Louis among the manliest cities in the United States .
We came in sixth place overall. Our drive to the top of the polls was helped by our love of bowling and our concentration of sports bars, which the survey said was the highest in the country. The top 7 cities: 1. Nashville FYI. Kansas City came in 8th... and, Cubs fans, you came in 46th, barely nosing out San Franciso for your manliness. There wasn't a Texas city in the top 20. (Sorry, Texans... I mistakenly said earlier in the top 50)

Tis high season for trivia in St. Louis. Here are some tips if you plan on hosting an event. 1. Go easy early. Put your easiest category at round 1. It will make everyone comfortable, and it might enduce them to spend more money on side games. 2. Set scoring expectations. Try to have the questions so that the winning score is in the mid-80s. To get there, each round should have one stumper question and two to three difficult questions. The remainder should be fairly easy. (Note: Joe Holleman told me he was at one impossible trivia night where the winning score was in the 40s. Sample question: List Maslow's hierarchy of needs.) 3. Have a little something for everyone. Too much pop culture is just as bad as too much science ... and go easy on the sports. 4. If you're going to have a music category, make it fun! Name the band, ask an intriguing question. Avoid the "fill in the lyrics" type of question, because people either will sing along out loud or getting the exact lyrics can prove nearly impossible. 5. Play a couple of side games (heads or tails, dead or alive, float or sink). That will keep everyone involved, even if their table is hopelessly behind. 6. Move it along! People will ask you to repeat questions all night long. Resist the temptation and cut off the questions. You should be finished by 10:30. 7. Throw them the occasional curve. In a National Parks category we had last week, for example, Kentucky was the answer to two consecutive questions. The groan in the crowd was palpable. Go out and enjoy! Friday January 9, 2009

I was with a buddy picking up a pizza at Two Nice Guys restaurant in Kirkwood over Christmas. One of the owners was telling us that, while business was hopping over the holidays, he was very concerned about slow months ahead in January and February.
Things must have been worse than he was letting on. I took the family to TNGs last Sunday. The next day I found out the restaurant had closed. That made me and my family very sad. Sad for the workers. And sad about the memories we had at TNG … the fine pasta dishes we had upstairs and the soccer parties we had in the basement. TNGs comes in at No. 7 in my list of St. Louis restaurants that have closed in the past year. Here’s the rest, along with some personal recollections. 6. Dooley’s … When the Pope was at the Dome, and St. Louis was like a ghost town, several co-workers and I took the walk to this place on a gorgeous January day. 5. Blue Water Grill … at Hampton, we had dinner with Vartan. In Kirkwood it felt like an escape … even if the Post-Office was just two doors down. 4. Balaban’s … my mom got the Bala-burger … and I loved the crème broulee. 3. Gino’s … with Lori, Claude and Kathy, Vahe and Cindy … I wonder how Cindy ended up with Kathy’s jewelry. 2. Busch’s Grove … never ate at the “new” Grove. But the bar there was a bookend for a great night. 1. Chuy’s … never failed to make me feel more fun, and younger, than I really am. If you do the math, you find that something incredible happened theaters over the weekend. "Hope Floats": The romantic comedy says it's run time is 114 minutes. And I sat through every single one of them. Wednesday December 10, 2008

News of underage beer drinking at Chuck E. Cheese promted this response from some childless friends: "I didn't know they served beer at Chuck E. Cheese!" Well they do. And even though some of my children are still very afraid of the giant-headed rodent, they still clamor to go there. So in honor of Chuck E., here are some of the unforgettable St. Louis mascots. Note: We don't count Mr. Happy Crack, since he's not really a walking 3-D stuffed mascot. The St. Louis U. Billiken: This character is either referred to as a
Louie, the Blues mascot: We're pretty sure that Barclay Plager is turning over in his grave.
The Columbia Hickman Kewpie: Somehow the image of a naked fuzzy baby does not strike fear in the opposition. This one barely beats out the Freeburg Midget in the high school division.
Fredbird: We're pretty sure this is the love-child that emerged from a one-night stand between the Philly Fanatic and Big Bird. ("My, what a fine tail you have!") Fred never lives up to the edginess or the warmth of either parent. Post-Dispatch Weatherbird: Scores this high on the list for longevity. Truman the Tiger: In a little more than 20 years, Truman has become as much of a Mizzou tradition as Harpo's, the columns and blown coverage in the secondary. Watch as Truman cranks dat soulja boy.Dirt Cheap chick: Our town's top mascot it getting a cult following. Fred ("them more she drinks, the better you'll look") even was able to convince one of our top ad saleswomen to get into the costume for an ad. Thursday November 27, 2008

Let’s face it, in these divisive times, there are so many topics that you just want to stay away from. Of course you want to stay clear of politics and religion, but even the very mention of turducken can bring you around to turkeys and slaughter and that Sarah Palin video … not where you want to go. So may we suggest these “safe” Thanksgiving table topics.
7. How low can you go? You can bring up gas prices. What’s the lowest you’ve seen? Will it get below a buck a gallon. By the way STLtoday reports the low at $1.29 a gallon at the Costco on South Lindbergh. 6. Richie Incognito: He’s done what no mayor and no archbishop has done for this town – brought everyone together. Nobody likes or respects the Rams crybaby offensive lineman. 5. What are you thankful for? This is a good welcome-to-the-family stunt to play on the new fiancée who is attending their first family get-together. Before dinner is served, solemnly bow your heads. Explain to the newest member at the family gathering that you have a tradition of having each person say what they’re thankful for – and that the newest attendee goes first. After the newcomer nervously struggles through it, you can then tell them they’ve been punked, then say a blessing and pass the stuffing. 4. Weather. This is usually a safe topic. Just be sure to steer clear of any mention of global warming and all that’s associated with it. 3. Thanksgiving Day parades. Throw out the topic. Which is the more iconic figure – Underdog in the Macy’s parade, or the giant Schnuck’s shopping cart in the St. Louis parade. 2. Rams vs. Lions. Since the Lions always play the early game, it’s worth bringing up the debate over who is the biggest laughingstock of the NFL. 1.Reddi Wip vs. Cool Whip. You can’t have pumpkin pie without whipped cream. Both of these taste the same (imitation whipped cream is imitation whipped cream, right?) But isn’t it a lot more fun to schpritzel the Reddi Wip from the can than to spread the Cool Whip with a spoon? How about you? Any topics to add? |
