Birthday parties
Posted by: Amy Bertrand at 6:52AM CST on June 22, 2009
I'm thinking of having my kids' birthday party at my house this year. They wil be 3 and 5 (boys), and it will be mostly family. In fact, the only kids will be them, their two cousins and probably two friends. I was wondering what kind of entertainment I should provide for them? Would doing a craft of some sort be corny? Maybe I should get a magician or something. Any ideas?

Is there anywhere that will test your kid to see what sports they might be good at. My son seems to be interested in everything, but we have neither time nor money to enroll him in everything. I think in the long run, he'll be better off if we find something he is good at, but how do you know??

We recently watched "Up," and I loved it so much. It got me thinking about the other kid's movies that are great for adults, too. The ones that come to my mind immediately are Toy Story and Shrek. What are some of your favorite kids' flicks?

We have a rule that our kids can only be involved in one activity at a time. When it's soccer season, no swimming. Then when soccer ends, swimming is fine. But now my son (he's just 4) is expressing an interest in karate. We'll probably hold off on that because it's expensive, but I started thinking, what really would be the harm in being out of the house two nights a week. What do you all do? Any hard and fast rules?

My young neices (3 and 6 yr old) are leaving late this afternoon, and I wanted to do something fun with them on the last day of their visit. Any suggestions on something fun to do when the weather won't cooperate?

We took the family to see this one-ring circus for the very first time. We had taken our older one to the big Barnum and Bailey circus a few years ago. Let me tell you, this is a completely different experience! If you haven't been, it's really a cool show. And, the kids loved it. Actually, I think the best deal is when they do the $8 matinee on Wednesday. Details are on their website http://www.circusflora.org/ And, frankly, I'm glad they didn't have any elephant acts, so I didn't have to worry about the whether any of the acts involved cruelty toward animals.

Wanting to take the kids to the movies this weekend. Which should we see? Any age recommendations? A friend actually said Up might be a little scary.
