Letting your child go into a public restroom alone

At what age did you let your opposite-sex child go to the restroom in a public place without you? My son is 5 and I thought I could let him go into a bathroom by himself (with me standing outside). But a stranger talked to him in there (he just said "Hi") and my son freaked out. I worry though that at 5 he's a little old for the ladies room.

My kids, 3 and 5 year old boys, love the new PBS show, "Dinosaur Train." Truth is, I do, too. I've learned so much about dinosaurs! Who would have thought a kid show can teach adults something.
