Getting ready for kindergarten
Posted by: denisemc on July 8, 2009 at 10:44AM CST
My daughter Ali is going to Kindergarten this fall in Wentzville.  I am so excited and so is she.  I have some ideas and suggestions for any parents who have a child going into kindergarten as I was a kindergarten teacher for 11 years.

I'd love to hear some ideas. I went to the orientation at the kindergarten a few weeks ago, and all I really got out of that is that you should have your kid ride the bus the first day if that is going to be your plan for the rest of the year.

My sister pinned a little heart shaped piece of paper to her daughter's dress with her name/number, teachers name and what bus # on it! I think some schools have parents do this for first few days.

When my first child was getting ready to start, an experienced mom across the street told me to write my son's initials/name or symbol on EVERY marker in his box. Thinking she was crazy I just labeled his box. By Christmas I had already had to buy 2 more boxes of markers as they just disappeared, got lost or mixed up. The year I marked every marker with a star and showed him, the box lasted the whole year! This system only works of course if the teacher is not using the community system with all markers in a pool on table and I have noted over the years that more teachers have moved away from that anyway....
