Back-to-school shoes in summer?
Posted by: Aisha at 10:10AM CST on May 25, 2009
My little girl outgrew her back-to-school shoes shortly before the school year ended this year. She is now asking for a new pair of tennis shoes, but I am trying to convince her that summer is meant for Crocs and sandals. Ideally, I want to wait until the start of school to get their new tennis shoes. But, she has countered with this: You can't wear Crocs or sandals on a park with pebbles or wood chips. Hmm...Should I give in?

My schedule is really unusual, working some day and some evenings, and with the summer approaching I'm trying to figure out some ideas for my kids that aren't going to wear me out so I too tired to work my regular job. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My daughter recently did this ice cream activity at school and the kids really loved it. She came home and we did together and OH how delicious it was!! I am thinking of substituting Splenda in place of the sugar to see if works...(this has worked w/ other traditional homemade ice cream recipes) as she is diabetic...Splenda is the sweetener that is favored by the doctors/hospital for these kids... Ok so here is the fun activity/recipe.... Milk can become homemade ice cream in five minutes by using a bag! This homemade, creamy treat is a summertime delight for kids and adults alike. What you'll need:
1 Tbsp sugar 1/2 cup milk or half & half 1/4 tsp vanilla 6 Tbsp rock salt 1 Pint size ziploc bag 1 Gallon size ziploc bag Ice Cubes
How to make it:
1. Fill the large bag half full of ice and add the rock salt. 2. Put milk, vanilla & sugar into smaller bag and seal it. 3. Place the small bag into the large bag and seal large bag tightly. 4. Shake until the mixture is ice cream which takes about 5 minutes. 5. Wipe top of small bag clean before opening and then ENJOY your ice cream!!!
Tips: 1/2 cup milk will make about 1 scoop of ice cream so double the recipe if you want more. Be careful not to increase the portions too much more as the bag gets heavier/harder for children to handle because of the ice!

All field trips to the Missouri Botanical Garden are free for students PreK - 12th grade if their school is within St. Louis City or St. Louis County. If a child from the Parkway School District had to pay for their field trip to the Garden it was either for transportation from the school (buses are very expensive) or $3.00 for Children's Garden admission, which is an optional choice booked by the teacher. Also, any school group that will be eating lunch during their visit to the Garden are asked to picnic at Tower Grove Park or they can purchase boxed lunches from Catering St. Louis to eat on the premises.

My son is in the 3rd grade and this year at school they made the Moms the greatest Mother's Day gift. His teacher made CDs of 11 songs including: "You'll Be In My Heart", "When I See You Smile", "The Wind Beneath My Wings" (my son called it, "Wind Beneath My Arms"). The kids selected one song and made a book consisting of the handwritten song lyrics and pictures they had drawn to go with the lyrics. My son picked Natalie Merchant's, "Kind and Generous". When the song started, he told me his teacher said to bring your Mom a box of Kleenex. It was so impressive and the best gift he has ever made for me. I was curious of what masterpieces other Moms received this year?

My son will be going to kindergarten in August. He is really excited. But at the same time, he is getting scared. Yesterday, I took him to the elementary school with me to drop off some paperwork. On the way home he kept saying, 'kindergarten is not scary...well, maybe the first time it is scary, but it won't be scary'. What can i do to help relieve his anxiety? I don't want him to worry about it all summer.

My son's elementary school goes on 1 field trip a year. This year they are going to Main Street of St. Charles and tour the First Capitol. We have to pay a bus fee and admission. My nephew go to a Pattonville school and they have been to the Zoo, Meramac Caverns, Busch Stadium, Science Center plus about 3 other places this year. Yesterday he took a field trip to Incredible Pizza! How does your school handle field trips?

Yesterday, when I dropped my children off at school, my son stayed behind for a minute. He got my attention from the door of the school and gestured "I love you" to me. It brought me to tears. What a sweet 11-year-old boy. It's those moments that have me feeling I'm raising some outstanding children. If you have any sweet stories, please feel to post them. We'd all love to hear them.
